I scrubbed and scrubbed the yellow ring at the bottom of my toilet bowl and it never moved. Then I learned why: that stubborn yellow-brown line is mostly limescale and minerals from hard water, stained by urine, and it needs an acid to dissolve it, not more elbow grease. Citric acid powder, sold for descaling kettles and in canning aisles, is cheap, mild-smelling and works beautifully if you give it time. Overnight is the key word here. It is not a seconds-long miracle, but in the morning most of the ring brushes away.
What you need
- 3 to 4 tbsp (about 40 to 50 g) citric acid powder
- 4 cups (1 liter) hot tap water (not boiling)
- 1 toilet brush
- 1 pumice stone made for toilets (optional, wet only)
- 1 pair rubber gloves
How to do it
- If you have used any bleach or chlorine cleaner in the toilet recently, flush two or three times first so there is none left in the bowl. Never combine acid products with bleach.
- Lower the water level so the stain is exposed: turn off the valve behind the toilet and flush once, or push the water down the drain with the toilet brush.
- Put on gloves. Dissolve the citric acid in the hot tap water and pour it slowly around the bowl so it covers the yellow ring. Never pour boiling water into a toilet, as it can crack the porcelain.
- Close the lid and leave it overnight, or at least several hours.
- In the morning, scrub the ring with the toilet brush. Most of the deposit will have softened and lift away easily.
- For any spots that remain, rub them gently with a wet toilet pumice stone, keeping it and the porcelain wet the whole time to avoid scratches.
- Turn the water valve back on and flush a couple of times.
Good to know
- Do not use this on toilets with a colored or specially coated finish without checking the manufacturer's advice.
- Once a month, a couple of spoonfuls of citric acid left overnight stops the ring from coming back.
- Rust-colored stains from iron in the water respond to the same method but may need a second night.
That first morning when the bowl came up white again was strangely satisfying. Try it tonight and see for yourself.
