A Hotel Housekeeper Taught Me This and I Stopped Buying Softener

I always wondered why hotel towels feel so thick and soft when mine at home turned stiff and scratchy after a few months. A housekeeper I chatted with on vacation laughed and told me: we never use fabric softener on towels. Softener coats the cotton loops with a waxy film, so towels feel soft at first but slowly absorb less and less. The real secret is washing out residue, not adding more. Since I changed my routine, my towels dry better, smell fresher and feel fluffy again, and I have not bought a bottle of softener in a year.

What you need

  • about half your usual dose laundry detergent
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) distilled white vinegar
  • 3 to 4 wool dryer balls or 2 clean tennis balls
  • 1 load cotton bath towels

How to do it

  1. Wash towels on their own, without clothes or anything with zippers, and do not overload the drum. They need room to move to get clean and fluffy.
  2. Use about half your usual dose of detergent. Too much soap is the main cause of stiff towels, because it never rinses out completely.
  3. Pour the white vinegar into the fabric softener compartment. It is released in the rinse, where it helps dissolve detergent residue and hard-water minerals. Check your machine manual first; most allow it, but use it occasionally rather than in every single wash if your manual advises caution with rubber seals.
  4. Choose a warm wash, 104 to 140°F (40 to 60°C), depending on the care label, and add an extra rinse if your machine has one.
  5. Take the towels out as soon as the cycle ends. Shake each one hard two or three times to lift the loops.
  6. Tumble dry on medium with the dryer balls, which beat the fibers as they turn. Take the towels out while they are just dry, as overdrying makes cotton harsh. If you line dry, give them a final 10 minutes in the dryer or a good shake when they come in.

Good to know

  • Never add vinegar to a wash where you use chlorine bleach; use one or the other, never both.
  • For very stiff old towels, run one wash with vinegar only and no detergent to strip the built-up residue.
  • The vinegar smell disappears completely once the towels are dry.
  • Fold towels loosely instead of pressing them tightly into the closet.

Give your towels two or three washes like this and feel the difference when you step out of the shower. Hotel softness, at home, for pennies.
